"Boca Raton Mayor to speak at EDC BioTech Conference"

City Provides $5,000 Grant in Support of Annual Event

The Enterprise Development Corporation of South Florida (EDC), a public/private partnership specializing in providing business development services to emerging science and technology companies, announced today that Boca Raton Mayor Steven L. Abrams will deliver the opening remarks at its 6th annual bioscience conference - BioTech 2007 on April 4, 2007, at Florida Atlantic University's Boca Raton campus. The City of Boca Raton has provided the EDC with a $5,000 grant to support the conference, which has come back to FAU for the first time after rotating among South Florida's three other universities.

"This grant will contribute significantly to the production of EDC's conference, which has grown significantly since the first event in 2002," said Jane Teague, EDC Executive Director. The City's support will help us to continue to increase economic development in the science and technology industries in Boca Raton, as well as throughout South Florida."

The theme of BioTech 2007 is New Frontiers in South Florida Bioscience, with a focus on collaboration and the region's 60 - year life science history, and how new clinical and academic partnerships will change South Florida's bioscience landscape. Participants at the day-long event will explore exciting opportunities in research, development and collaboration in South Florida.

Dr. Richard A. Houghten, founder and President of Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies, will serve as keynote speaker. Dr. Houghten has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards, and has been nationally recognized for his contributions to various scientific fields. He will discuss the past successes and future plans for the Institute.

Other conference highlights include sessions on new collaborations in bioinformatics and biomedical science, funding for life science companies, and other business and regulatory issues, plus poster presentations and sponsor exhibits.
